A Ninth Grader Drinks Excessively With His Buddies, Suffers From An Alcohol Overdose, And Finds Out That Paying Attention In Class Can Make A Difference

Andy was a high school freshman who commonly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and generally wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The main holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a consequence able from a legal framework to drive a car and to consume alcohol.

Andy, in spite of this, had a rough time accepting the fact that as a fifteen-year-old person he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, then again, Andy usually drank with his buddies after school, predominantly on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy was invited to drive around with some of his older guy friends. One of his pals was old enough to buy alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Andy and all of his cronies went to a public park and drank for around three hours.

After drinking roughly ten wine coolers, Andy started to feel nauseous and then vomited. When he became unconscious on the tennis court, one of his pals called 911 for assistance. It was fortunate that the call for medical help was made because when his pals went to the hospital to see Andy, they were told that Andy had been manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms. In short, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was in reality surprised to discover that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had approximately five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he stated this to the attending physician at the hospital, however, the healthcare professional notified Andy that drinking five or ten glasses of wine over a two or three hour period of time could in fact be significantly more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The healthcare professional further stated how too much alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's breathing and that when this comes about, a person can cease to exist.

This was the first warning to Andy that he was drinking in a perilous fashion and that there are effects for such behavior. The healthcare professional told Andy that he was a fortunate person because he almost died from an alcohol overdose the previous night.

The healthcare professional also had a word with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol counseling for Andy. His parents were relieved that Andy was safe and sound and notified the healthcare practitioner that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol treatment.

While conversing with his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a special reason why he did not die and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the odd part about the entire drinking occurrence was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the past week in health class at school.

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Now that he almost died, in spite of this, he felt that he should have listened more attentively in health class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.

Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to the classroom and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not displaying more attention to something that was as important as learning about alcohol poisoning.
