A Woman Manifest Symptoms Of Alcohol Addiction And Depression And Makes An Appointment To See Her Medical Practitioner
Cindy was a thirty-two-year-old financial planner who knew that she had a problem with her drinking. As an illustration, within the past three months she has felt the need to have a drink or two before going to work, six weeks ago she failed a random urine alcohol test at work, four months ago she got stopped by the police for a DUI, and lastly, for approximately two months she has begun to forget what she says and does when she drinks.
Similar to hosts of other people, Cindy's alcohol involvement started out slowly and stayed at this pace for quite some time due to the fact that sometimes she engaged in occasional social drinking. In actual fact, for approximately three years, every time she drank, she made sure to drink in a responsible manner. Something about her drinking behavior, however, seemed to radically change when she got divorced from her husband.
Cindy got awfully disheartened about the breakup with her husband, and as a way to quit dwelling on her disheartening feelings she decided to start associating more repeatedly with some of her pals who love to have fun drinking. It didn't take long, however, before her drinking escalated to a significant degree the more often she went to and drank at happy hours, family get-togethers, dinner dates, sporting events, and private parties with her friends.
Simply put, she was drinking and having a great time just like everyone else in her group of friends without giving much thought to the alcohol short term effects and particularly about the alcohol long term effects she has been experiencing. Yet in the recesses of her mind she knew about the negative alcohol effects on the body and on the brain and that she probably needed alcohol rehab but avoided the thought as much as humanly possible.
One day during her annual physical, her doctor asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to tell "stories" to her physician, Cindy "came clean" and stated that she frequently drinks more than she should. In fact, she said that she frequently drinks in an excessive manner. Then Cindy told her doctor about her dejection. More specifically, she mentioned that shattered relationships many times elicited a negative cycle of events typified by increased drinking which further led to more depressing feelings that, in turn, led to more drinking. And this is precisely what happened when she and her husband got divorced five months ago.
Cindy's doctor then told her the following: "I am not trying to make a snap judgment, but with your medical circumstances we may be facing two separate matters. As a result, I think we ought to schedule an appointment for you to get an alcohol abuse and alcoholism evaluation from my partner, Dr. Franks, who is a drug and alcohol abuse specialist."
"Whether your drinking situation is more associated with alcohol abuse or alcohol addiction is not clear, but I think that further evaluation is warranted. Then I think we ought to make an appointment for you to get a psychological examination from another one of my partners, Dr. Devor, who is a clinical psychologist."
"I want to get a better handle on your melancholy and see how much your drinking and depression are interrelated." Cindy expressed her satisfaction with her physician's strategy and thanked him for his assistance.
