A Young Man Requires Therapy For His Intense Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Drug Addiction And Alcohol Dependency

Around eight months ago I had lunch with a thirty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As explained by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship problems.

As stated by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship problems and by both of his medical issues that he in essence has little or no energy to complete much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished one semester of grad school in sports history.

Benjamin's circumstance makes me question if he is an illustration of a person who can look within and perceive his drinking problems and substance abuse and do something healthy about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he a person who has to hit life's bottom before he gets drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation that leads to long lasting recovery.

It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his drug and alcohol addiction. For starters, there are more than a few recently discovered physician-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is completely nothing helpful about chemical dependency and careless and excessive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the map to poor work and school performance, legal problems, shattered relationships, deteriorating health, financial difficulties, and a premature death. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship difficulties might help him cope with these mental health difficulties more successfully and possibly create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin lacks the resolve to succeed at doing much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he definitely needs some hope for a more fulfilling life. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he requires for his intense depression and drug addiction and alcoholism and stick with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is simply too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to abstain from drugs and alcohol through alcohol and drug rehab and get the counseling he needs for his extreme depression, he can turn his life around and start living with direction, self-respect, and passion.

More meaningful relationships, constructive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to get the medical rehab he requires, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in an alcohol and drug-free and healthy way, and learn how to cultivate a more positive attitude about his existence.
