Richard had a particularly difficult time keeping a job. As a matter of fact, due to his sluggishness and lack of incentive, he was without a job far more often than he was employed with a job. And when he did get a job, he had a particularly difficult time getting to work in a timely manner, he often received less than optimal performance reviews, and he called off sick so often that he typically got fired just a few weeks after he started working.

To no one's amazement, one of the results of Richard's appalling employment record was the fact that he was just about flat broke almost everyday. Despite Richard's less than acceptable work record and financial negligence, conversely, one way or another he made it his business to drink in an irresponsible and excessive manner almost everyday.

So it came as no big shock when Richard got a second DWI. When he went before the court, the magistrate told Richard that his alcohol-related actions was shameful and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to spend six months in jail.

During his time in the county jail, Richard was expected to learn more about alcoholism facts such as alcohol consequences and alcohol deaths, about the harmful results of excessive and abusive drinking, and he was expected to get alcohol therapy. The judge stressed the fact that unless Richard gets quality alcohol rehab and learns how to live a life of abstinence, he will quite possibly be spending quite a bit of his time placed behind bars.

Richard said that he understood what the magistrate was proclaiming but he still claimed that incarceration was not the correct verdict. The judge saw things from an entirely different orientation and asserted that it was his responsibility to keep alcohol dependent persons off the streets who drive and drink and who get arrested for one or more DUIs. To authenticate this statement, the magistrate listed some honored, extensively researched alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse statistics that underscored some of the unhealthy outcomes that are linked to excessive and abusive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Although Richard grasped the fact that he drank irresponsibly, he never believed that he was an alcohol dependent individual. So it was a real bombshell when Richard began experiencing chronic alcoholism signs and symptoms and alcohol withdrawals about five hours after getting placed behind bars.

To manage his alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a harm free manner, Richard was life flighted to an alcohol rehabilitation hospital for alcohol detox and then brought back to the county jail. While locked up in the local jail Richard got alcohol treatment but due to the fact that he received this therapy as something that was imposed upon him, he did not take ownership of his hazardous and excessive drinking.

When his time behind bars was over, the judge announced to Richard that he would be under stringent observation and would be mandated to take random urine alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard did not take ownership of his drinking situation and how he unwillingly followed the counseling procedures while in jail, the magistrate knew that it was basically a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his irresponsible and abusive drinking behavior.

As the judge reflected on Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some people never use common sense and learn how to live in an adult manner.
