Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, The Link Between Coping Skills And Excessive Drinking, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Education
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? More than a few alcohol abuse consultants believe that beer, liquor, and wine advertisements brought into being by the media are a fundamental reason for the escalation of teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcohol abuse consultants believe that the increase in youth alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and convenience of alcohol. Still other alcohol addiction authorities declare that many of our teenagers engage in injurious drinking due to the increased disquiet that they experience.
From a slightly different outlook, since both parents in many families are gainfully employed, the lack of parental supervision indubitably has to play an essential role in the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse. And last but not least, an assortment of alcohol abuse experts assert that the escalation of adolescent alcohol abuse is due, to some extent, to our permissive society.
One feature of adolescent alcohol abuse that looks like it is lacking in the alcohol abuse research literature, in contrast, is the deficiency of educational courses that teach students how to augment their coping skills so that their excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior is extensively reduced or eliminated. Stated differently, scientific research has made obvious the fact that there is an indirect link between poor coping skills and alcohol abuse.
In effect, this means that the worse the coping skills, the greater the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a correct affirmation, why isn't coping skills education a significant part of the academic prospectus in all of our junior high schools, elementary schools, and high schools?
Let us manufacture a scenario for illustrative purposes. Let us imagine a society in which students are trained how to achieve high-quality coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school. In such a society, when life gets challenging, people who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more productive manner, as opposed to others who fail to execute their coping skills.
More to the point, students who reveal sound coping skills will be more able to think clearly and demonstrate top-shelf decision making as opposed to students who, because they lack good coping skills, resort to the "quick fix" of hazardous and excessive drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, in addition, if students not only got excellent coping skills instruction but also received a first-rate education that focused on the long term and short term injurious costs associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills instruction, it is asserted, would help students avoid the noticeable attraction with youth drinking and, as a result, would notably lessen the dangerous drinking behavior exhibited by teenagers in our country.
There are surely scores of defensible reasons why so many of our teens abuse alcohol. Such a knotty subject matter demands a wide-ranging and relevant response by our educators, politicians, parents, and students so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more fruitful and accountable way instead of gravitating to unhealthy and excessive drinking to solve their problems.
