Aerobic exercise is a physical activity that may be sometimes aligned with anaerobic exercise. In the instance of someone running a number of miles at a reasonable pace, this is treated as being akin to an aerobic exercise, while short sprints are not viewed as aerobic conditioning. Indeed, any physical activity that consists of rhythmic motion will be termed as aerobic exercise, though activities that have frequent breaks are not considered to be aerobic exercises.

A general disparagement of aerobics is that it is inadequate for professional benchmarks, such as those demanded of athletes, combatants, and police and fire personnel. This may be because aerobic exercises do not provide muscular strength, particularly in the upper body musculature.
