A process known as a PCNL, or percutaneous nephrolithotomy, is one kidney stone operation that is a lot more invasive. The surgeon may perform this procedure for larger kidney stones. With this procedure, the surgeon makes a cut in the patient's back and then injects a narrow telescope into the kidney. The surgeon will then break the stone up and take it away. This procedure is used in cases of huge stones or in case the lithotripsy does not work.

Even though rarely used, in some cases the surgeon may also make a cut in the side in order that he can reach the kidneys. This enables him to easily remove the stone. This type of kidney stone treatment is scarcely needed.
